Hey Jim - I've been poking around those forums but haven't really spent a ton of time tracking that info down. Turns out Larry (AWDSOLDIER) has an M5 and a scanner that he's offered to let me borrow.

You know, my M3 is a convertible, and not sure if you've ever looked into that platform for your wireless convertible top thingy?

Ryan - what are you looking to do with the scanner?

There is a cable you can get that connects your laptop to the OBD2 port over the CANBUS. You can code things like folding in the mirrors from the keyfob, changing the number of light flashes for lane changes, which lights light up when you unlock the car, enabling speed readout on the cluster. I coded my car for a bunch of things like those.

As far as the convertible - I assume the key fob already supports opening and closing the roof doesn't it?

The most challenging mod I did was adding seat heating. I got the heater pads, wiring parts and control modules and did a completely factory installation including coding the car to know that it has the seat heating feature. Not even the dealer could tell it is not factory equipment.

Anyway - congrats on the M3, they are very nice cars!

I'm mainly interested in correcting the speedo (http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=452010) but those other things sound like fun too. I need some more time with the car in order to understand all the things I can already do. I am not sure if I can get the top to come down with the remote - I don't think so though.

Bought myself a scanner off Amazon after realizing they only cost ~$20. Yet to try it though. Anyway here it is ...

Honestly don't know yet. As soon as I got it home I took the d/side mirror apart to tighten it up, turns out a bracket was broken, had to order one, of course BMW doesn't sell it separately from the $750 mirror, but a guy in the UK makes replacements, so I ordered one and have been waiting for that bracket to arrive ever since. It's taken more than 2 weeks to ship from the UK.

Got the mirror buttoned up and took it out on the back roads for the first time ... wow. What a car. It's super nimble like my old Miata but with enough power to make it fun. Chassis is really composed. The linear N/A power is really nice. ... It's like playing gran turismo on easy. With only 225s on the front! Ugh now I might have to actually keep it.

Haha. Thought you might fall in love with it. Seems like most m3 owners stay dedicated for life.
