Any tips for snow driving with FWD?
I'm heading to tahoe later this month and god forbid anything go wrong with it, I'll probably end up driving the SL up there. My tires are about a year and 2 months old. I'm changing the brakes+rotors soon.
I've never driven in the snow and I don't have an AWD car in the family to take. What would you guys do? Bad Idea?

If the roads are clear- you'll be fine. If you decide to buy chains- make sure they are of good quality. I've seen quite a few f'd up fenders from chains that either came loose or were installed incorrectly. Won't be a pretty site.

Re: Any tips for snow driving with FWD?
dont even trip, fwd is way better than rwd in da schnoe, if its clear ur good, if snowing buy the right size chains, and yea, buy chain tensioners too. after u put them on, drive half mile and retighten, make sure all loose ends are clipped in, so as to avaoid any chain slapping and fed up fenders. also make sure they r tight cause the last thing u want is a chain wrapped around your axle. only use chains over summit from checkpoint to checkpoint, as soon as you get to the one goin the oppsoite direction, take those bitches off, you dont need em around town. dont slam on the brakes, if anything pump em, and really dont even use the, fws beuty is it pulls the car out of the slide. Highly suggested, try to find an empty parking lot (i.e. sierra at tahoe f lot) an get familiar with the ebrake, that can save ure ass too, and counter steering, there is def an art too it, i lived there for 8 years with a fwd saturn. if ur headed downhill and start to lose it into a snowbank, steer away from it and yank the ebrake till you are facing the road again and gas it, just try not too hit any other cars, that would suck, and watch out for gapers, on and off the hill! good luck have fun!

Re: Any tips for snow driving with FWD?
It's been 12 years since I've driven in snow, but I don't recall the FWD ever being a problem. Just make sure you take it easy on the gas and don't make any sudden turns of the wheel. Your tires may not be all weather rated, so if you could borrow a set of all weather radials from someone, that'll help alot.

Re: Any tips for snow driving with FWD?
That was the point lol. ^This. Honestly Abe you probably wont hit snow, let alone snow you'll need chains for, but it's not a dumb idea to bring some and know how to install them. A lot of roads will require them when snow is present...but then there is none, just some icy roads which are a bitch if it's warm out :-\.

Re: Any tips for snow driving with FWD?
Better check to be sure. Most tires sold in California are not rated for snow.

Re: Any tips for snow driving with FWD?
Abe, bring the snow chains. Save this phone number. 1-800-427-7623. Call that number before you leave for your trip. It will tell you if you need snow chains from Applegate or further up the moutains. Look at your tires, see if it has M + S. If it does, your good to go. These are rated for mud and snow so they are all season tires. If there is no M + S on them, sorry (I belong in Jersey Shore), you can't go up. There are snow chain installers on the side of the freeways during a snow storm. It costs around $25 to have them install the chains for you. You can learn by looking up youtube videos or pratice at your own home first. Max MPH when its snowing or when chains control is in effect is 40MPH. Don't go over, for your own safety. I've seen some dumbasses pass me up when I'm in the RAV4 going like 50 - 60 mph. One time, a SUV passed me up only to see him in a ditch about 5 - 6 miles up after he passed me. I've seen some bad accidents on 80 when its snowing because no one respects the speed. These accidents are mostly SUVs too. I've seen them flip over, fall into ditches. I'm just glad no one fell off a cliff yet. So when when you go up Abe, make sure you have M + S tires, the right size chains, know how to install them or pay someone to intall them. You do have to pay another $20 if you want them to take the chains off. Make sure you go at a steady pace, when in a snow storm. I hope this helps (I belong in Jersey Shore)!
